DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Sociometry (which gives us the “is” acronym in is PRESS) in this case is PRESS partners Heather Link Bergman & Peter Miles Bergman are excited and honored to have a large zine-themed installation in the fall MCA Denver exhibition Citizenship: A Practice of Society curated by Zoe Larkins. is PRESS also designed\, co-published\, and letterpress printed the covers of the exhibition catalog. The exhibition runs from October 2nd through February 14th with timed entry. \n\nCheck out the exhibition catalog!\nTour the Institute of Sociometry exhibition installation!\n\n  \n \n  \nThe Institute of Sociometry (or is) is a culture jamming and guerilla communications collective with over 700 accredited special agents in 23 countries. A core group of about two dozen agents keep the dream alive with the communications nucleus headquartered in the is PRESS studio. Sociometry is the “quatitative analysis of individuals and their relationship to groups”.  is does focus on the analysis of individuals and their relationship to groups\, however\, we don’t typically hold ourselves to the rigorous standards of math or science! \nHowever\, our “Incidence Report” for Citizenship: A Practice of Society did involve A LOT of statistical analysis. For this exhibition we took out long running “LLiLL\, Leftist Leaflets in Little Libraries” project and created a large scale installation of the content of LLiLL #1 and LLiLL #2 zines and developed a live issue #3 (zine coming in 2021). \n \nThe Art of Menstruation by Thu Tran of Colorado Springs Colorado placed at 492 S. Clarkson\, Denver\, Colorado. \nLLiLL started in 2017 when Peter started buying leftist\, punk\, queer\, green\, and racial justice zines and placing them in Little Free Libraries in the bougie neighborhood of West Wash Park that the is PRESS studio in on the western commercial edge of. The following summer and fall in 2018 Peter spray pain refurbished an abandoned JOBS! classified newspaper box he boosted from a bus stop and placed in in front of The Institute of Sociometry headquarters (and Peter and Heather’s house) stocked with the same type of zines. Curious about who was taking zines\, he bought a $19.99 Chinese “Cam-Hi” security camera from Amazon and began surveilling passers by. 3704 were logged over the course of 47 days. In 2020 Heather\, deep undercover in a career as a public-service advertising executive deployed her extensive market research skills to analyse the data via 13 different criteria\, breaking all the “consumers” into four distinct clusters with snappy names like “Comfortable Complements” and “Bohemian Ways”. Heather’s finding – the core if LLiLL issue #3 and the new work in the installation culminated in the following hour long seminar titled “Woke Not Broke\, Using the Social Conformity Index™ System to Asses Zinability™“. \n  \n \n  \nThe installation features a zine wall with leftist zines from a variety of artists and publishers with a framed picture each of being placed in a little free library. The main room contains all the logs\, and consumer insight surveys\, in massive grids and a “bar graph” comprised of hundreds of small surveillance photos all held up with 1000+ tacks and linked together with color coded book binding thread. On top of this  base layer are the best of thousands of surveillance photos blown up and framed\, a stop motion time lapse of all passers buy over the four month period\, four framed consumer profiles\, the Woke Not Broke video and a live feed that taps into the MCA’s own security system – alternating with a shot of the zine stocked LLiLL out in front of the MCA and the gallery containing the installation which surveils museum patrons in real time. SUMMARY:Chicago Art Book Fair 2019 - Wrap Up

Front to back: Manny of Flatlands Press\, Peter of is PRESS\, Brandon of Almighty & Insane Press\, Sir Charles with his new book and Illustrator Jo Minor \n \nis PRESS set-up at CABF 2019! \nAlso see our review with stats! \nis PRESS tabled with our sister imprint Flatlands Press at the 3rd annual Chicago Art Book Fair November 15th – 17th 2019. CABF 2017 was our first Art Book Fair after innumerable zine fests; and\, we’ve tabled every year since\, growing with it as we all learned to crawl\, stand\, and walk! We’ve since tabled at the Detroit and Vancouver Art Book Fairs\, and plan to apply to NY\, LA\, and SF Art Book Fairs this year. But\, Chicago is and will always be our home-away-from-home favorite! And this year it felt like a family affair! \n    \nIn addition to holding it down with Manny from Flatlands Press \, we were neighbors with Almighty & Insane Books – a NYC based imprint with a strong Chicago connection through their Chicago Gang Business Cards book series. This summer we were fortunate enough to partner with Flatlands Press  to do the letterpress printing for Almighty & Insane’s newest title Letters To Chicago by Chicago hand-style master Sir Charles. We got to know Brandon Johnson\, Almighty’s publisher and Sir Charles a little bit through all the text-comm doing the job. So\, for a minute when we showed up and saw they were next to us\, we thought\, “What are the chances!?” until we realized this was ACTUAL curation in effect! The CABF Directors Imani Jackson\, Aay Preston-Myint\, Conor Stechschulte & Alexander Valentine did such an excellent job of not just organizing but actually curating a diverse selection of international publishers. We’re eternally grateful to be included in a roster of such heavy hitters and set up next to our droogs! \n            \nThanks for all the support!  \nHighlights and Shoutouts:  Catching up and crashing with my main man Manny Grim of Flatlands Press\, his wife Risa and daughter Ella at their beautiful new pad in Berwyn with the studio in the basement. Seeing a NY friend Skye Savage who I’d just hung with in Denver the week before\, who was in town for an academic conference while I was in the midst of selling out of her partner (and one of my best friend’s) Vincent Comparetto’s Follow Focus #2. Having a childhood friend from Wyoming Kendra Sandstrom\, who is a librarian in the south Chicago suburbs and  I haven’t seen in 25 years\, roll through! Having a former design student (and current Creative Director) from Denver\, Stephanie Goodwin and her husband Pete come through and buy ALL THE BOOKS… Catching up with painter and animator and fellow SAIC Visual Communication MFA alumni Shellie Argeanton and her husband Bobby. Chowing down at El Mezquite\, a timeless neighborhood spot in Pilson with Manny\, Brandon\, and Charles. Catching up with zine festie-bestie Lindsey Faloona of the Chicago Collage Collective and Light Heavy Zine. Picking up a new zine from former SAIC F News colleague Dimitry Tetin. Catching up with my favorite teacher from SAIC grad school\, bookmaker extroirdanare Myungah Hyon and meeting her hilarious colleague\, ace sculptor and printmaking instructor Kate Conlon and her partner painter and all around crafty guy Bo Hou who had converted his full art book fair table into a billiards table! Seeing Denver ex-pat now Chicago local\, conceptual artist and drummer Jordan Knecht who I realized could have been my best friend in Denver when I got to know him 3 days before he moved… Selling my ’artner Heather Link-Bergman’s accordion book PASSAGE to Shreya\, a student at SAIC making an accordion fold book in the same program where Heather and I first met! \nSee ya’ll at Chicago Art Book Fair 2020! \n  \n
